My Favourite Things: Monday
T’is Monday again and the theme for today (for me) is favourite houseplants. Thelma is also looking for suggestions for kill-proof plants that are cat-friendly, so hop on over to her blog if you have any ideas.
At the moment, our house is adorned by exactly two plants, and to say they are ‘adorning’ is really stretching it. Considering I’ve opted not to put photos of the poor things on the blog speaks much for their current state of health. The two plants are both African violets, which I buy upon occasion when they are on sale for $2-3 each. These current plants did very well for quite awhile, getting new leaves and flowers. Then one day they decided to stop flowering, and now they are just greenery. One’s greenery is a lot healthier looking than the other. In fact, there are even two plants squished into the tiny pot. I did go so far as to buy some African Violet plant fertilizer, but it seems that a bottle of fertilizer in the cupboard is not so helpful in nurturing the plants. Apparently I’m supposed to actually fertilize the plants?
Part of the problem is we do not have any location in our house particularly conducive to plants. I’m told that African violets are partial to northern exposure, so I’ve put them by the appropriate window. However, that means they are behind my computer monitor, so I can barely see them, and the blind is closed 90% of the time, so the despite being on the northern side of the house, it really isn’t that helpful for them. I’m thinking that the next time I go on a cleaning rampage, the end will come for these little plants, and our home will then be devoid of plant life. Until perhaps, African violets go on sale at a local grocery store again, and I bring a couple home, to see how hardy they are, and how long they can put up with my loving (or lack thereof) plant care. Or maybe my thumb will feel green on my next cleaning rampage, and I will instead re-pot the two healthy looking plants and see if that makes them any happier!
After today, My Favourite Things: Monday will be changing to a bi-weekly frequency for an indefinite period of time - I'm following Thelma's lead here. Hopefully I'll think of other things to write about during the "off" week.
Hope y’all had a great Monday!

I, personally, admire people who can keep live plants alive. I am a plant-killer...and if I'd gone by the recommendation not to get an animal until you can keep a plant alive, I'd never have gotten a dog! ;-)
you could try a jade plant - they are just green, but they do pretty well with neglect (they are a desert plant so don't need too much watering). Thorn of crowns is pretty too and will keep kitty away because it has thorns. It also has really pretty little red flowers. It grows like wildfire (even with neglect).
hrrrm. maybe I need a plant.
