Our Weekend

This past weekend Rob and I had a little getaway, to celebrate our third anniversary. It is hard to believe it is three years already - we're so thankful for what God has given us, and His blessings to us.

Our journey, 1113km long, took us to Ottawa. We left Friday evening, and made great time, as we made it in a little over 5 hours, and we had to slow down quite a bit as we neared Ottawa because it was snowing. On Saturday, we spent more than half the day outside. It was a beautiful day, especially considering it was January 26 and we were in Ottawa! Sunny, and not too cold, we skated on the Rideau Canal for a while. The canal had just been opened for skating the day before. When fully open, the skating "rink" is 7.8 km long, but it was not all open yet. At least 3 or 4 km was open though.

After lunch, we walked up to Parliament Hill. Our hotel was right downtown, and we were within walking distance of the canal and the Parliament buildings.

While wandering around the Parliament buildings, we came across the home for the stray cats. Apparently quite a few of them live there, and someone felt it necessary to build them a home, and come feed them daily. A posted sign indicated that no federal funding was used for this, but there was a donation box! And look at the size of these cats - they were not thin, any of them, and slept contentedly in a little cubby-hole while the squirrels ate the cat food!

You can't see it in the picture, but there is a cat sound asleep in the left cubby-hole. While the squirrel is helping himself to an afternoon snack.

On Sunday morning, we left Ottawa and headed for Brockville URC. A little over an hour away, we made it in good time, and it was great to see/meet Wilburt & Julie, whom we knew from years gone by. Brockville URC has their two services back to back, so we stayed for both. When the second service was over, it was about 12:30, and we decided to try to make it to Hope Reformed Church for their second service. We had been diligently checking our voicemail on Saturday, and knew that Yvetta Rose had made her appearance on Saturday morning. So off to Toronto we went. In under 3 hours, we were in the parking lot at Credo, an uneventful journey. However, a soldier must have died in Afghanistan recently, and come home on Sunday. All along the 401, from Trenton into Toronto, at many of the overpasses, there were people gathered, with Canada flags, or "Support our Troops" banners. Rob and I guessed that a convoy carrying the soldier's body was behind us and these people were out showing their support. We don't know how far behind us the convoy was, but we saw people for about 2 hours of our trip, as we travelled along.

After worshipping with our brothers & sisters at Hope Reformed Church, we stopped in at Rich & Cher's for a little while, to congratulate them, and to meet sweet little Eva Rose. See Rich & Cher's blog for more pictures! We're thankful that she's safely here. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
